Building on the success of its successful implementation of aquaponics learning in Johor and Kelantan, Caltex Malaysia proudly announces the eleventh iteration of its Fuel Your School (“FYS”) initiative, a community programme dedicated to improving education in underfunded schools. This year, the initiative is expanding to Northern Malaysia, reaching Perak for the second time, with the first FYS in the state back in 2017.
In collaboration with the MyKasih Foundation and HAVVA Agrotech, and endorsed by the Ministry of Education, the Fuel Your School initiative continues to engage schools in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning. Beyond the classroom, the programme drives food sustainability, equipping both students and the communities with hands-on experience in smart aquaponics systems.
"Expanding to Perak in the Northern region was a natural progression for us as we look to deepen our impact with our Fuel Your School programme. Perak has a vibrant community with bright young minds and we hope to be able to plant the seeds for the next generation through this programme. We want to be a catalyst where these young students are able to develop their minds through STEM learning and nurture a landscape where education and sustainability grow hand-in-hand. With the previous iterations of FYS, we saw a positive shift in student engagement with science. At the same time, the Fuel Your School initiative provides a tangible solution for food sustainability. By empowering these 10 schools in Perak, Caltex Malaysia hopes to build more resilient communities while inspiring a new generation to lead in STEM,” said Mr. Leong Jee Wong, Country Chairman of Caltex Malaysia.
Fuelling The Future in Perak
Kicking off the eleventh edition of Fuel Your School, Caltex Malaysia is delivering specialised smart aquaponics systems to 10 selected schools in Perak. Unlike traditional farming, this system utilises an automatic water circulation system - a modern approach to create a self-sustaining natural farming ecosystem.
To ensure long-term success, HAVVA Agrotech will conduct food security workshops at each school, equipping both students and teachers with the knowledge to manage the system. Each harvest cycle takes approximately six weeks to complete.
In addition, the campaign enables students and teachers to gain hands-on experience in producing fresh harvests, including vegetables, herbs, microgreens, and fruit plants. Through the programme, students will be able to learn and be equipped with sustainable farming techniques for the modern world, while fostering STEM education awareness and contributing to food sustainability within their communities.
For continuity in this programme, each participating school in Perak has officially been adopted by a local Caltex service station retail partner. Beyond financial support, these partners will take an active role in the journey by participating in workshops and events and fostering closer bonds through collaborations.
Building Impact Beyond the Classroom
Since its inception in 2012, the Fuel Your School initiative has positively impacted over 112,473 individuals across Malaysia, supporting STEM-based empowerment and improving access to quality educational resources in schools.
Specifically on the learning of aquaponics which started during the 9th edition of FYS back in 2024 in Johor and thereafter in 2025 in Kelantan, to date, the initiative has recorded a cumulative harvesting result from both states across the 2-year period, approximately 1,235 KG of vegetables and 210 KG of fish in promoting both STEM learning and food sustainability in schools.
Feedback gathered through interviews with participating teachers and students highlighted strong positive responses to the programme’s impact. There is also strong support from parents, some of whom are eager to be involved in the STEM learning process.
“The smart aquaponics system has transformed the way our students learn and engage in 21st century learning. It encouraged a shift towards student-centred learning, in which we noticed our students are more curious, ask questions and conduct their own research instead of simply receiving information in the classroom,” shared from a teacher from a participating school.
Students also shared their excitement with one student saying, “We were very excited and honestly a little surprised that our school now has a system that combines agriculture and smart technology. It feels like something we would normally only see on YouTube or at innovation exhibitions, but now we get to experience it ourselves.”
As Caltex Malaysia continues its journey across the nation, the social investment initiative, Fuel Your School reflects the power of community-driven change. The initiative goes beyond the classroom in enhancing public education facilities by giving underprivileged students to experience good quality classroom learning. With every school adopted, every harvest grown, and every young mind inspired, it is this spirit of long-term investment that continues to build trust and drive meaningful change across Malaysia.
